Do You Remember?
As Remembered by: John Sullivan

I remember when the B-52 went off the end of the runway during an exercise (can't remember the name) where we launched all 52's as though soviet missiles were inbound. The 52 had hounddogs and quail on board. The plane sank so low the pilot/copilot opened their windows and stepped out on the ground. The hounddogs were buried deep in the ground. The quail were unloaded underwater after they dug a deep enough hole. I heard the 52 couldn't be lifted out so they tore it apart and it became a trainer.
I also remember the holes in the back of our building where the rear gun on the 52 went off during maintenance. |
Roger Gjone not only remembers, he had the photo to prove it.

The article said there were no weapons on board, however a AGM pylon is fairly visable. Was this a coverup? Would our beloved SAC do that ?

Added Note from Roger
It was returning from an ORI Mission, it was a rainy evening - I was at home - off base - waiting for a call to come in and turn the Hound Dogs around, reservicing them with Ammonia, as I recall it was the 2nd plane to return from the mission, the pilot apparently landed too far down the runway, decided to abort the landing and try it again - but ran out of real estate. As I recall we were told the fire crews showed up, the plane was in the mud, engines running and the crew was no where to be found.
And, yes there were missiles under the wings
Bob Sloan and I retrieved the missiles after they were removed from the plane and they sat for a while on the lawn near the combine systems building.
