What Does it Take to Get Promoted in This Man's Army ?

There was a young 2nd Lt Maintenance officer, He worked real hard at growing a bushy mustache and we constantly had to tell him to trim it. The DCM went TDY to Randolph to sit on the officer's promotion board. When he returned he got all of his officer staff together to tell them how the board was run. He said that each board member had approximately 30 seconds to review each officer record before making a determination on it. The Officer asked him how that could be possible since there was a lot of information that had to be reviewed. "Oh," the DCM told him, "that was easy." "Each officer personnel folder has the man's picture inside the front cover. That was the first thing I looked at. If the officer had a mustache, I placed him in the 'Do not promote' stack. That gave me more time to spend on the others." After the meeting, the young Officer went straight to his quarters and shaved his mustache off. He was a 1st Lt when we closed down.
A Commanders Memories

The 449th AMMS at Kincheloe AFB hosted a visit by the band from the Michigan State School of the Blind. My family had two of the kids overnight with us at home. In conversation they asked if they could "see" a Houndog. Took them to the squadron and gave them a touchy feely tour. One of the birds rolled in off the flight line and the troops down loaded the weapon shape, let the kids feel that so they could see what a megaton felt like. Word spread, took them out to the flight line, the ground troops were amazing, each "adopting" a band member and leading them all around a BUFF and a KC-135. They even had them walk the wings up on top to get the sense of how big it was. All maintenance stopped and those kids had the time of their lives. We made a large board with a BUFF, KC-135 and a AGM-28 Hound Dog Missile model on it and presented it to the School. It is still in the entranceway. Probably the high light of my tenure as a Squadron Commander. The troops were super!
I'll Never Tell

There Was a Captain In charge when we first got to Travis AFB. His name was something like this "Caminski," I probably spelled it wrong. One spring night he was said to be in the Top of the Mark, (The Mark Hopkins Hotel in San Francisco) Got a little drunk so the story goes and shot his mouth off about the Missile. The story or rumor as we heard it said there were Security people there from the US NAVY in the bar and heard him mouthing off. He was quickly removed and arrested. We never saw him again. It was rumored he was court marshaled. I have no real proof other than what I heard Lt Hotter tell someone on the phone. But his name was removed from everything connected with the Squadron. We were called to a gathering and admonished that very next morning after his breach of security to in short keep our mouth shut for there were a lot of security people about and we could go to jail. No mention of the Captain was ever said or officially given to us lowly airman about what happened to him. But the next week a Major was put in temporary command.
